On Monday, the Miami Dolphins waived two multi-time Pro Bowl players, edge rusher Bradley Chubb and wide receiver Tyreek Hill.
Edge rusher remains a clear need for the New York Jets; we recently explored the possibility of New York pursuing Chubb.
Hill is a much different player. The ceiling is higher, and the risks are even greater.
Here is a look at the pros and cons of the Jets pursuing the eight-time Pro Bowler, with one side outweighing the other.
Pros
Hill, 31, is one of the NFL’s most accomplished active wide receivers.
A five-time first-team All-Pro, Hill has topped 1,000 receiving yards in six of his 10 professional seasons, performing at an elite level for most of his career.
Meanwhile, the Jets continue to search for reliable pass-catching production behind Garrett Wilson.
After leading the Jets with over 1,000 yards in his first three NFL seasons (2022-24), Wilson only played in seven games during the 2025 season as a nagging knee injury left him sidelined from Week 7 through the season’s conclusion. Yet, Wilson still led the Jets in receiving yards with 395 despite playing in less than half the team’s games.
New York finished dead last in receiving yards with 2,784. It is worth noting that the gap between the Jets and the 31st-ranked Browns (3,152) was larger than the gap between the 12th-ranked Chicago Bears (3,991) and the 22nd-ranked Pittsburgh Steelers (3,632).
Simply put, the Jets’ receiving unit is extremely unreliable past Wilson.
By signing Hill, the Jets would land a proven wide receiver who would immediately become the most talented wideout Wilson has worked with in the NFL, even at this stage of Hill’s career.
Hill played in only four games in 2025, but he still caught 21 passes for 265 yards and a touchdown despite leaving shortly after halftime in his fourth appearance. He finished the season averaging 2.55 yards per route run across limited opportunities, which was on track to be the third-best mark of his career.
However, there are numerous downsides that come with Hill.
Cons
The 31-year-old suffered a torn ACL in Week 4 of the 2025 season and was left sidelined for the remainder of the year.
As Hill’s 32nd birthday approaches on March 1, it is worth questioning how he will perform after such a severe injury at this stage of his career, especially as a wide receiver whose game is built around speed.
Many off-field issues have also followed Hill throughout his professional career.
Most recently, in April 2025, Hill was involved in a domestic incident. That followed a 2019 child abuse investigation involving his then three-year-old son, contributing to an extensive off-field history that teams will certainly keep in mind this offseason.
Hill had an inconsistent relationship with his quarterback in Miami, Tua Tagovailoa. After the 2024 season, Hill seemingly expressed interest in leaving the Dolphins when he posted “I’m out” on his X/Twitter page, and changed his profile picture to Antonio Brown running off the Jets’ field. Afterward, Tagovailoa stated in September that he and Hill “worked on” their relationship throughout the 2025 offseason.
The Jets are focused on rebuilding their internal culture, with defensive tackle and leader Harrison Phillips emphasizing the need to move away from what he described as a “cancerous” culture. The distraction Hill could cause if the team struggles is another factor to strongly consider as New York enters the second year of a regime that went 3-14 in year one.
Ultimately, Hill’s production when he is healthy is undeniable, but for a 3-14 squad actively trying to rebuild their locker room culture, the risk outweighs the reward.
