The Ohio State football program is one of the few programs that can operate with NIL at a high level. They have some rich donors who help donate to NIL causes. Most of their money goes to the football program, but the men’s and women’s basketball programs get some money, as well.
NIL has become a massive part of how football programs are built. Indiana won the national championship this past season in part because of how it has been able to take advantage of their NIL money. The Buckeyes are trying to do the same with how the current system is built.
Ohio State president Ted Carter knows the Ohio State Buckeyes have an advantage when it comes to NIL, but he doesn’t believe the current system is advantageous to collegiate sports as a whole. He let that be known in a recent interview he did with a local TV station.
Ohio State president Ted Carter rips current college sports system
In an interview with Dom Tiberi of 10TV in Columbus, Carter gave his thoughts on the current system in college sports.
“I am worried. I’ll just say right up front, I’m not trying to make a headline; it’s not sustainable. If you look at the trajectory from where we started with House vs. the NCAA and where it’s gone the last couple of years…it is not sustainable over the next three years unless something changes.”
Carter is echoing a sentiment felt by many other presidents and athletic directors across the country. They want some changes made that will help rein in the spending and put some guardrails up. Carter also wants an uncapped NIL because he believes schools will circumvent the cap if given the chance.
“When you restrict money, you cause people to do things against the rules.”
Carter didn’t offer any direct solutions, but it’s clear he’s not happy with how the current system has been treating collegiate athletics. The Buckeyes will keep trying to adapt to the current system that is in place, the best that they can.
