One of the Green Bay Packers‘ most notable pending free agents this offseason is wide receiver Romeo Doubs.
A fourth-round pick of the Packers in 2022, Doubs is set to hit free agency for the first time in his career after four solid seasons in Green Bay that saw him break 600 yards three times while scoring 21 total touchdowns.
The problem with re-signing Doubs is that the Packers have a crowded wide receivers room already, and the team doesn’t have a great cap space situation, with Green Bay sitting at $1.5 million over the cap currently.
Because of all that, the expectation is Doubs will be playing elsewhere in 2026, and that notion was given a boost by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, who said Doubs is “likely” to move on in free agency.
“With Doubs likely gone in free agency, the Packers should find more targets for [Matthew] Golden in 2026,” Demovsky wrote.
Despite the expectation that the Packers will let Doubs walk in free agency, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted that the door isn’t completely closed on the two sides staying together.
“The Packers can try to re-sign free agent receiver Romeo Doubs and/or extend tight end Tucker Kraft, a 2027 free agent,” Fowler said. “The door isn’t closed on Doubs in Green Bay. I’m expecting both sides to at least have some dialogue and see if a return makes sense.”
While that’s all well and good, the fact of the matter is it doesn’t make much sense for the Packers to re-sign Doubs given their current situation. Green Bay would be wise to spend its resources on an actual position of need.
Golden didn’t have much of a role in Green Bay’s offense, with the first-round pick seeing just 44 targets all season, which he turned into 29 catches for 361 yards.
Golden will likely be the biggest beneficiary of Doubs’ departure, although he still has a ton of competition for targets when you include Christian Watson, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks and Tucker Kraft, all of whom are under contract.
As for Doubs, he should do well in free agency during an offseason in which the wide receiver market isn’t great.Â
