One of the top offseason priorities for the Detroit Lions is addressing the offensive line.

After sporting an elite unit for years, things haven’t gone as smoothly for the Lions upfront the past two years. Things were particularly bad in 2025, when Detroit ranked 31st in pass-block win rate and 20th in run-block win rate, per ESPN.

Part of the problem is the changes that have occurred upfront.

Frank Ragnow retired, which led to an unsuccessful experiment at center with Graham Glasgow, who is a clear cut candidate this offseason.

The Lions also have two young guards in Tate Ratledge and Christian Mahogany trying to find their way and Taylor Decker hasn’t been the same because of injury, which could lead to him getting cut in 2026.

At the very least, the Lions are going to need a new center or guard this offseason. That will depend on where the Lions envision Ratledge ending up.

With the team’s need on the inside, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press believes there’s a “high likelihood” the team will sign Arizona Cardinals interior offensive lineman Hjalte Froholdt if Arizona cuts him this offseason.

“If the Cardinals release Froholdt I think there’s a high likelihood he ends up in Detroit,” Birkett wrote.

Froholdt has been a pleasant surprise for the Card as a solid starter over the past three seasons. In 2025, he ranked 16th in run-blocking grade and ninth in pass-blocking grade, per Pro Football Focus.

Compare that to Glasgow, who ranked 36th and 26th in those categories.

So, why would the Cardinals part ways with him?

Froholdt is entering the final year of his deal and is going to turn 30 in August, so that could leave him out of the team’s long-term plans. Even if that’s the case, we find it hard to believe the Cardinals will simply cut him.

Arizona isn’t exactly desperate for cap space and Froholdt carries a minimal 2026 cap hit of just $6.9 million, which is a bargain. Cutting him would only save $5.6 million.

If the Cardinals do decide to part ways with Froholdt, it’s going to be via trade, where he’ll likely draw plenty of interest. Starting-caliber offensive lineman are hard to come by so Arizona could get a very nice return for the veteran.

When it comes to the Lions, acquiring Froholdt makes sense, even if it has to be done through trade.

The veteran has experience playing at guard and center, so he could slot in at either spot depending on what Detroit wants to do with Ratledge.

We tend to believe the Lions should keep the youngster at guard for continuity and acquire a veteran to replace Glasgow. Froholdt has always done his best work at center and he’d be an excellent option to anchor the interior in Detroit.
