The Buffalo Bills are in the process of moving to a new home stadium. They won’t be going far — in fact, the stadium will still be in the Buffalo suburb Orchard Park — and they won’t even be changing it’s name. The new Highmark Stadium is set to debut in the 2026 season, so no temporary home stadium needs for the Bills.

Earlier this week, however, all construction on the project was halted when some graffiti was discovered around the new stadium “in several secure locations in both finished and unfinished areas” of the site, per WKBW 7 News. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said the graffiti was “pornographic and what we believe is anti-LGBTQ” in nature.

After halting work on Tuesday, construction began again on Friday. But some of the damage was pretty severe, with estimates in the $150,000 range. “A lot of this, unfortunately, cannot just be cleaned up,” Erie County Commissioner of Public Works William Geary said. “It’s going to have to be ripped out and reinstalled.”

If there’s a silver lining in this story, it’s that Bills fans have a chance to earn a serious chunk of change. Gilbane-Turner, the construction company working on the Bills’ $2 billion stadium project, is offering a $100,000 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.

Geary said the perpetrator(s) used an oil-based spray paint that did significant damage to already-completed sections of the project, including granite surfaces, marble finishes, tile and wood surfaces, and some flooring. Based on the fact that only those with badge and swipe access to the facility can get in, they were able to narrow down the possible suspects to about 300 employees.

Official Statement From the Construction Company Working on the Buffalo Bills’ New Stadium

“We suspended work because the people who come to this jobsite deserve to work in an environment that reflects respect and professionalism. When that standard is violated, we address it and take the time to reset expectations. That is who we are and how we operate,” Gilbane-Turner said.

“Gilbane | Turner maintains zero tolerance for graffiti, vandalism, or any behavior that undermines the respectful and supportive environment we expect on our projects.”

“We appreciate the strong support we have received from our trade contractors, unions, local officials, law enforcement, and the workers on site as we work to identify those responsible for this unacceptable act. The response reinforces what we know to be true: the overwhelming majority of people on this project are committed to maintaining a welcoming and professional work environment.”

“A $100,000 reward has been offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of those responsible.”

“Work will remain suspended on Thursday as we continue our investigation and prepare to welcome approximately 1,500 workers back on Friday to a jobsite that reflects the standards they deserve.”

“This stadium will be delivered on schedule. Maintaining a safe, respectful, and supportive jobsite is our highest priority.”
