The Chiefs have promoted Matt House to be their new outside linebackers coach

The Kansas City Chiefs have been busy to start the offseason, as head coach Andy Reid has worked on revamping his coaching staff after a disappointing 2025 campaign. While all eyes are on Travis Kelce‘s potential retirement and Patrick Mahomes‘ injury rehab, Reid has been transforming his staff after the team fell apart last season.

Reid has made some bold hires, but one of his more eye-catching moves saw him block one of his assistant coaches, Matt House, from interviewing with other teams this offseason. That seemed to indicate a promotion was coming House’s way, and sure enough, he has found himself with a new role on Reid’s staff heading into the 2026 season.

Chiefs Promote Matt House to Outside Linebackers Coach

The veteran NFL coach and former coordinator was blocked from multiple interview requests this cycle as the Chiefs wanted him to remain in Kansas City as a key part of their staff.

House has worked as a football coach for over two decades now, with the majority of his roles being on the defensive side of the ball. Most notably, House served as the defensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Panthers, FIU Panthers, Kentucky Wildcats, and LSU Tigers during his time in the college ranks.

After spending the 2024 campaign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, House found his way to the Chiefs, where he also worked from 2019 to 2021 as their linebackers coach. In both cases, House was a member of Reid’s staff, and he spent last season working as a senior defensive assistant alongside defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Early this offseason, Kansas City surprised some folks when it blocked interview requests from House, as he seemed primed to at least earn consideration for several defensive coordinator openings. Reid simply did not want House to leave town, and now we know why, as he has been promoted to outside linebackers coach for the 2026 campaign.

“Matt House will be the Chiefs’ outside linebackers coach, per source,” Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reported in a post on X. “The veteran NFL coach and former coordinator was blocked from multiple interview requests this cycle as the Chiefs wanted him to remain in Kansas City as a key part of their staff.”

Reid’s aggressive maneuvering early this offseason with his coaching staff shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. For the first time since Mahomes took over as the team’s starting quarterback, the Chiefs didn’t advance to the AFC Championship Game, so the fact that they missed the playoffs entirely shows that there was a lot wrong with this team that needs to be fixed.

The good news is that Reid seems to recognize this, and if his work with his coaching staff is any indication, the team will likely be quite aggressive when it comes to its roster building in free agency and the upcoming 2026 NFL Draft. Right now, nobody knows whether or not Kelce is retiring or when Mahomes will return to the field, but Reid is doing his best to ensure that whoever is suiting up for him is receiving the best coaching possible from his staff.
