The Minnesota Vikings finished in the bottom 10 in team rushing yards (1,841) and in the bottom 10 in rushing yards per game (108.3) during the 2025 NFL regular season, per ESPN. As a result, Minnesota needs to bolster this part of its offense, especially if it wants J.J. McCarthy as its starting QB.
Moreover, Aaron Jones Sr. is on the downside of his career, and the Vikings need to find a younger RB1 who can be a consistent threat on the ground and take pressure off the passing game.
Minnesota can use either free agency or the draft to grab a player who can fill that RB1 role. Recently, the Vikings were floated as a potential landing spot for the New York Jets‘ Breece Hall as free agency approaches.
With his future uncertain, Hall recently spoke to the New York Post about where his mind is as he nears the open market.
“I don’t know,” Hall told the Post (h/t Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic). “I’ve addressed this for like six, seven months. Now I’m just kind of like: whatever happens, happens.”
On Feb. 21, ESPN NFL insider Jeremy Fowler reported the latest on Hall and whether he’ll remain in New York or test free agency.
“The Jets are weighing all options with Breece Hall’s future, including a tag and/or an effort toward a long-term deal,” Fowler wrote on X. “Some inside league expect the transition tag for Hall (around $11.7M), but that’s yet to be determined.”
Analyst Sees Vikings as Fit for Jets’ Breece Hall
CBS Sports’ Damien Harris listed the top four destinations for Hall and noted that Minnesota makes sense for the Jets star.
“Let’s look at the Minnesota Vikings and what they went through with J.J. McCarthy last year,” Harris said on the Feb. 20 edition of CBS Sports HQ. “Outside of the inconsistent play, it was just his lack of availability. There were a lot of times when J.J. McCarthy was not available to play.
“Then you look at the running back position, a guy like Aaron Jones, he’s had a lot of success for the Vikings, don’t get me wrong, but they still need a guy to come in and be their bell‑cow workhorse. To be quite honest, I think outside of Justin Jefferson, the Minnesota Vikings need a guy that’s going to step up and be an alpha on offense.”
Breece Hall Would Fill Missing Element for Minnesota
Moreover, Harris notes that Hall would bring traits that the Vikings don’t have at running back, with someone who can contribute on the ground and in the passing game. Minnesota could also be adding a player who can help take the focus off of Jefferson and keep the opposing defense from focusing on the Vikings’ star wideout.
“They don’t have a ton of playmakers or a ton of guys to where if there are a lot of eyes and attention on Jetta, they can go somewhere else with the football,” Harris added.
“And again with Breece Hall, with what he is able to do both running and catching the football and in pass protection, I think it just overall elevates this Minnesota offense, which is struggling right now, especially again they’ve got to figure out what they’re going to do with J. J. McCarthy and then start to work from there.”
Hall has had 755 carries for 3,398 yards and 27 touchdowns in 56 games for the Jets, per StatMuse.
