Since 2020, the Jacksonville Jaguars have been one of the more active teams in NFL free agency.

Jason Fitzgerald of Over the Cap recently ranked each team by how much they’ve spent in free agency between 2020 and 2025 and how many free agents they’ve signed.

A few caveats to note as Fitzgerald put together this list were that only free agent signings in the months of March and April counted, and the deal had to be for at least $2 million. This data also only included new additions and not any re-signings.

During that span, the Jaguars signed 41 free agents, which was tied for the third-most. The $294.3 million that Jacksonville has spent on a per-year basis in free agency was the second-most, and Jacksonville was near the top in cost of average free agent deal, which is valued at $7.17 million per player.

David Caldwell was the Jaguars’ general manager during the offseason portion of the 2020 season. Trent Baalke then took over from 2021-2024, followed by James Gladstone last offseason.

With Baalke at the helm, and as the numbers above illustrate, we often saw the Jaguars go searching for those high-priced free agent additions that were brought in to help bring sustained success to the organization. However, for the most part, the results didn’t follow, with one playoff appearance during that span.

But Gladstone would take a different approach in his first year as GM. We saw quite a few free agent additions made in an effort to reshape the roster, which Gladstone did quite drastically. The contracts, however, were shorter-term, two or three-year deals that don’t really weigh down the Jaguars’ salary cap situation, relatively speaking.

With Gladstone, free agency was more of a supplement and is meant to raise the floor, whereas the draft is where the Jaguars are searching for more of those high-impact additions.

Gladstone’s approach and revamped roster in 2025 were a resounding success, as the Jaguars banked 13 wins in Liam Coen’s first year as head coach.
