AFC could be nervous if Chiefs fix problematic position this offseason originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Most will agree that the Kansas City Chiefs won’t suffer the same fate as they did in 2025, simply because what are the odds that a Patrick Mahomes-led team would miss the playoffs in back-to-back seasons?

Also, the Chiefs do have a nucleus of talent on both sides of the ball that gives Andy Reid’s team a high floor; add in Mahomes, and that floor goes higher than most teams’ ceilings.
But there are roster holes the Chiefs need to fix, and you can make the case that the offensive side of the ball should take priority.
And for CBS Sports’ Josh Edwards, running back is a weakness.
“Kansas City once had a star-studded offensive unit featuring some of the game’s best at their respective positions: Patrick Mahomes, Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce,” Edwards wrote. “Kelce has obviously slowed down a bit as he has aged and the team has done an inadequate job of filling the production lost when Hill was traded. Running back has been a weakness.”

Chiefs could super-charge bounce back with RB signing
Mahomes’ weapons, even now, with Rashee Rice, Xavier Worthy, and Travis Kelce, are enough to give the Chiefs some serious firepower.
But the running back position is one that, if upgraded, could tie everything together and give Kansas City a genuine home run behind Mahomes.
Breece Hall and Travis Etienne have been mentioned as possible free agent signings, while Jeremiyah Love has been mocked to the Chiefs in several mock drafts.
So, most know that fixing the run game is key for Andy Reid this offseason.

And if the Chiefs get a star back like Hall or Etienne, the AFC will be nervous because the conference’s apex predator will be back with a vengeance in 2026.
