The situation at quarterback continues for the Indianapolis Colts.

Shane Steichen and the Colts took a gamble on signing Daniel Jones on a one-year deal to become the starting quarterback, who had to have a training camp battle with Anthony Richardson.

Jones won the starting job and led the Colts to one of the best records in the league in the 2025 season after 8 weeks (7-1).

The QB then suffered two leg injuries that led to the end of his season. Jones was on track to have his best passing season in all major metrics.

Indianapolis and Jones are currently in contract talks to retain him beyond the 2025 season, but the Colts should prepare if they are unable to come to a number with the quarterback.

While Daniel Jones heals from his leg injuries, the Indianapolis Colts need a replacement in case Jones is not ready for Week 1.

Anthony Richardson is likely on his way out, and Riley Leonard is unlikely to get snaps as the Colts went out to get a retired Philip Rivers when Jones was ruled out for the season.

Part of Indy’s cap space is going to Jones, making it hard for them to make a notable signing in free agency, forcing them look elsewhere.

With uncertainty about who will be the QB in Week 1 of the 2026 season, Jared Dubin of CBS Sports names Indianapolis as a landing spot for Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson.

“This seems at least somewhat unlikely for two reasons. The first is that the Colts seem highly likely to retain Daniel Jones, either with a new contract or the franchise tag. The second is that Simpson is unlikely to fall into the middle of the second round,” Dubin wrote.

“But if Jones signs elsewhere and teams collectively decide that Simpson is not worth a first-round pick, then Indianapolis could wind up in a position where it wants to devote resources to making Simpson the future.”

The 2025 collegiate season was the first time Simpson was a starter and he did not disappoint.

Simpson threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns to 5 interceptions. The Bama quarterback also recorded 2 touchdowns with his legs.

The 2023 SEC champion has been compared to Tony Romo by Bleacher Report’s Damian Parson.

While impressing with Alabama, many analyst belives Simpson doesn’t have enough starting experience, which may drop the quarterback in the draft and allow the Colts to pick him up.

Similar to the Indianapolis Colts, the Cleveland Browns also have their own long-term worries at quarterback.

The Browns started four different players behind the center and it appears none will stick around for long, as new head coach Todd Monken is eyeing two quarterbacks in the upcoming offseason.

Cleveland [dot] com beat writer Mary Kay Cabot reported that the Browns are looking at Ty Simpson as one of those options at quarterback.

Indianapolis first selection of the 2026 NFL Draft is the 47th overall pick, which may result in the loss of the opportunity to land Simpson, as the Browns have multiple draft picks ahead of the Colts.
