Three teams that could be hitting the reset button at quarterback this offseason are the New York Jets, Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins.
The Dolphins appear set to part ways with Tua Tagovailoa, either through trade or cut, the Jets are likely to cut Justin Fields after a failed 2025 campaign and the Steelers aren’t sure if Aaron Rodgers is going to be back.
Knowing all that, all three teams should have their eyes on the Atlanta Falcons and quarterback Michael Penix Jr. based on a recent rumor.
That’s rumor, according to SportsBoom’s Jason La Canfora, says the Falcons are considering going in a different direction at quarterback in 2026.
“The Falcons are considering moving on from quarterback Michael Penix after disappointing performance and behavior,” La Canfora reported.
Penix had a lackluster showing in his first full year as a starter before he suffered a partially torn ACL that ended his season early.
Because of that, and with a new regime coming aboard in Atlanta, it’s not crazy to think Penix’s days are numbered in Atlanta.
If the Falcons do decide to replace Penix, they could put the former No. 8 overall pick on the trade block, and in the event that happens, we could see the Jets, Dolphins and Steelers all being interested.
While it’s true Penix failed to live up to expectations, he’s still just 12 starts into his career, so it’s fair to wonder if better days could be ahead with more experience, and we’d bet other teams around the NFL will be thinking the same.
Furthermore, Penix will only be 26 years old next season and can still be the long-term solution the Steelers, Dolphins and Jets are looking.
The Steelers will definitely want a more established quarterback if Rodgers doesn’t return, but Pittsburgh could do worse than throwing Penix into a competition with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.
The Dolphins and Jets are both rebuilding and probably shouldn’t be unloading any draft capital for anything less than a sure thing, which Penix isn’t.
However, part of the process for Miami and New York is finding a young franchise quarterback and Penix could still potentially be that guy.
