The tight end position has fueled plenty of speculation with the Philadelphia Eagles these past few weeks, with both free agency and the draft looming for a position group that could soon be undergoing a serious overhaul.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has nailed certain picks at the position, including Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert. With Goedert now a free agent, though, and with fellow tight ends Grant Calcaterra and Kyle Gransen also no longer under contract, it’s been a hot topic of late. In Brooks Kubena’s article for The Athletic, Roseman reflected on his approach towards the tight end spot.
“I would say that the tight end position starts with me in evolving,” Roseman said. “You know, I think that from my perspective I’ve always had an affinity for kind of the receiving tight ends. I think that that’s shown in my work. You know, unfortunately for me, I can’t hide behind anything other than the product we put out there, which I’m proud of. I think that that’s also something that as you evolve as a GM, as an evaluator, and you watch what’s out there, you got to be cognizant of the fact that at some levels, the game has changed, you know, and so there’s certainly room for both of those spots.”
Howie Roseman dives deep into tight end position
Regarding the positional performance shown by the group this past season, Roseman was complimentary of the individual talents, but, as a collective, he was his own toughest critic.
“I think when you look at our room this year, probably needed more of a diverse skill set at that position. All good players that we had there. But probably could have used that.”
That second statement sheds further light on the collection Roseman rolled with in 2025, one that is now hitting free agency all at once, except for Cameron Latu. Blocking in the run game wasn’t up to par, something Roseman sounds headstrong on changing.
The need for a force in the running game at tight end seems obvious. A road grader, such as free agent John FitzPatrick, could be brought in, while the upcoming draft class offers intriguing talents such as Kenyon Sadiq, who could help enhance the vertical passing attack.

As it stands, the tight end room in Philadelphia is vacant and ripe for renovation. Judging from Roseman’s recent self-reflection, a whole new look at the position could be in short order.
