GREEN BAY, Wis. — There are 38,000 season ticket holder accounts for the Green Bay Packers and more than 155,000 people on a waiting list for those coveted seats at Lambeau Field.

What You Need To Know

The Packers said they have not renewed a few thousand season tickets in recent years

Those non-renewals are focused on ticket holders who are solely selling their season tickets

The team said the policy is helping them move people off the waiting list for season tickets

For a few years, the team has been declining renewals to season ticket holders who are solely selling those tickets.

“Being a season ticket holder really means going to games. If you’re going to games, you’re going with your family, your friends, your co-workers, business associates,” said Aaron Popkey, the Packers’ director of public affairs. “Using the tickets the way they’re intended.”

If the primary ticket holder can’t attend a game, the team is continuing its policy of asking season ticket holders to funnel them to their family, friends and business associates in part to help keep their home-field advantage.

“What we’re saying is if you repeatedly sell those tickets in that way, or through a broker, either indirectly or directly, those are the situations that we are addressing through this non-renewal program,” Popkey said.

Travis Loftus is the manager of Ticket King, a little more than a block from Lambeau Field.

“It’s basically been business as usual. We’ve been in business for over 30-plus years and have a great working relationship with a lot of our season ticket holders,” he said. “They can trust us with their tickets if they can’t make it to a game. Say they fall sick, come upon a hardship of not having enough money to pay for their tickets, etc. Obviously, things come up in life. That’s kind of what we’re here for to help mitigate and move the tickets for them.”

The policy is something his customers ask about.

“We get our general questions, ‘Hey, can the Packers do this? Can they not?’ Obviously, that’s not a question I can answer,” Loftus said. “That’s up to the Packers for whatever letter of the law exactly what they have.”

The policy is being sent to season ticket holders next week with annual invoices. It applies to both the green and gold ticket packages.

The team has a passionate fan base that would like to come off the waiting list.

“Over the last few years, we have not renewed a few thousand tickets. That has allowed us to go to our season ticket waiting list and bring on more than 1,000 new season ticket holders,” Pokey said. “We know those fans who have been waiting for decades are eager to go to Packers games at Lambeau Field.”
