Former Bills quarterback Davis Webb was in the running for Buffalo’s head coaching position this offseason, but Joe Brady ultimately secured the job.

Webb served as the Broncos‘ passing game coordinator and quarterback coach last season. Following the team’s loss to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game, Denver decided to part ways with offensive coordinator Joe Lombardi and promoted Webb to his position.

Webb Will Call Plays This Season

Broncos head coach Sean Payton must be quite pleased to have Webb as his offensive coordinator this season, as he is making an unusual change.

Payton addressed the media at the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday and announced that he will allow Webb to call the plays this season.

“It was something that I kind of knew during the year,” Payton said, via Pro Football Talk’s Charean Williams “He and I visited on a handful of occasions. He’s extremely talented. With regards to play calling, it’s something that I think he’ll be really good at it. I know that’s like, ‘Man, are you going to give up play calling?’ I would only do that if I thought it would help our team.

“I’ll still be involved with what we do offensively, just like what we do defensively, but I do think he has a gift. I think he’s real sharp. I’m glad he’s on our staff. Typically, any decision we make like that is to benefit our team. I’m looking forward to it. . . . I think it’ll help us, and certainly I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t think it was going to help our team win. You get to a point where you’re focused strictly on improving your team any way you can.”

Payton has typically been the play caller on every team he has served as head coach; however, handing that responsibility to Webb is a big deal for him.

Webb Spent Time With Josh Allen

Webb is about to have a significant opportunity this upcoming season to show the NFL world that he is capable of becoming a head coach in the league. He will be calling plays for one of the NFL’s stronger teams. The Broncos finished first in the AFC this past season, and if their star quarterback, Bo Nix, hadn’t broken his ankle during the AFC divisional round, there was a real chance they could have made it to the Super Bowl.

Webb spent the 2021 season with the Bills as a backup, where he had the opportunity to sit and learn behind Josh Allen. During that time, Webb could have identified what Allen does well and translated it into how he coaches quarterbacks in the NFL.

The Broncos’ decision to give Webb the play-calling duties is a fantastic opportunity for him. It’s a great chance to call plays under one of the best offensive minds in the NFL. With Payton there to guide him if needed, Webb will have the support he requires to succeed.

The Bills and Broncos might meet in the playoffs this season, and hopefully, Buffalo will be looking to get its revenge
