The San Francisco 49ers desperately need some help at wide receiver this offseason. Ideally, the Niners will land a burner or two with some speed to make the offense more dynamic.

That’s why it wouldn’t be a shock if the Niners are connected to KC Concepcion out of Texas A&M. He is a speedy threat who put up solid numbers in college, but it is questionable whether he will still be on the board when San Francisco selects at No. 27 overall.

Concepcion transferred from NC State prior to last season and joined the Aggies. He put up some strong numbers with 61 receptions and 919 yards with nine touchdowns.

His highlight reel is not difficult to get excited about. The speed is obvious as he repeatedly broke away from defenders with the ball in his hands. He also has had success as a punt returner, which could be another role of his with the Niners if they are unable to bring back their free-agent receiver and return specialist, Skyy Moore.

On the bright side, the draft seems to be pretty strong at the wide receiver position as a whole, and not many view Concepcion as the top receiver. That could allow the 21-year-old to fall right into San Francisco’s lap, but a recent mock draft had the speedster going a few picks ahead of where the 49ers are, currently, in the first round.

A lot can change between now and late April, but if wide receivers start going off the board, then teams could easily reach a little bit so they don’t lose out on getting one of the top receivers.

Maybe the 49ers could trade up a few spots if they decide that Concepcion is their guy. The Niners traded up to select Brandon Aiyuk back in 2020, so they have shown they’re willing to do that to get a receiver they like.

Having a speedy deep threat like Concepcion in the mix would give head coach and offensive play-caller Kyle Shanahan a shiny new toy to play with. Even if there would be some growing pains, as there always are with young receivers playing for Shanahan, the promising wideout would give the offense an added wrinkle it desperately needs.

The Niners saw how limited their offense is without speed when they put up just nine points total and scored no touchdowns in two of their final three games against the Seattle Seahawks. Even the legendary Jerry Rice said the team needs more speed.

Drafting Concepcion may be the best way to address that lack of speed, but he may not be there at No. 27, which could force them to trade up to get him.
