The Patriots are facing a crucial decision regarding their free agent pass rusher, K’Lavon Chaisson. If New England decides not to re-sign him, it may need to look for experienced free agent pass rushers to fill that gap.

New England should not consider signing Jadeveon Clowney to replace Chaisson.

Clowney recently wrapped up his 12th season in the NFL, after spending his first season with the Dallas Cowboys. He delivered a strong performance, racking up 8.5 sacks in just 13 games. However, he does involve considerable risk.

The 33-year-old pass rusher has been around the NFL ever since he was the No. 1 pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has played for seven different NFL teams and hasn’t been in the same place for back-to-back years since he was with the Cleveland Browns from 2021 to 2022.

Clowney prefers to sign one-year contracts because NFL teams are likely hesitant to commit long-term, as they’re uncertain about what they’ll get from him. Since this might be one of Clowney’s last opportunities for a contract, he could be inclined to seek a deal longer than one year. The Patriots should be cautious about pursuing this type of agreement.

If Clowney weren’t nearing the end of his career, he’d be a nice option. Yet, given that he’s almost finished playing, there’s a chance he could underperform this upcoming season, which is something the Patriots can’t afford.
