When the Baltimore Ravens drafted Kyle Hamilton 14th overall in 2022, they believed they were getting a difference-maker. What they didn’t know was just how rare he would become. Speaking ahead of the 2026 NFL Combine, general manager Eric DeCosta reflected on whether the team anticipated Hamilton’s extraordinary versatility on draft night.

“Well, we certainly didn’t know that Kyle [Hamilton] was going to be as good as he is. He was the best guy for us to make the pick at the time. Kyle’s a unicorn. I think one of the things that I appreciate the most about Kyle is his intelligence. He’s a very, very smart football player. He kind of operates in four dimensions. He has the ability to kind of see what’s going on in front of him. His spatial awareness is second to none, and he’s just very talented. He has tremendous versatility in his game and [great] ball skills, and he’s definitely a force multiplier.”

Back in 2022, the Baltimore Ravens believed they were getting a versatile chess piece when they drafted Kyle Hamilton 14th overall. What they’ve gotten instead is a true defensive unicorn. DeCosta’s comments make it clear that even the Ravens didn’t fully see this coming. Hamilton hasn’t just lived up to his draft slot; he’s outperformed it. And if this is what he looks like this early in his career, the scary part for the rest of the league is that he’s still ascending.
