Brett Veach says Chiefs have plan for either direction of Travis Kelce’s decision

  • February 25, 2026

INDIANAPOLIS (KCTV) – Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said Tuesday the team has a plan in place regardless of what Travis Kelce decides to do as the start of the new league year approaches.

Kelce’s contract expires in two weeks, when the new NFL league year begins. If he does not re-sign or announce his retirement before that deadline, he will enter free agency.

Veach spoke about the situation at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, saying conversations with Kelce and his representatives have been ongoing.

“Travis is the best, he’s an icon, and hopefully he comes back and we’ll just kind of let that process play out,” Veach said. “You need some sort of deadline timeline, but at the same time, I mean, it’s Travis Kelce, so we’re going to just continue to have positive dialogue and see where this thing ends, but I think we’re trying to position ourselves that either way, you know, we have a plan moving forward.”

“It’s not your typical — hey, 27-year-old first time in free agency,” Veach said. “Travis has done everything, he’s accomplished everything — he’s about to get married, he’s got a lot going on.”

Veach said Head Coach Andy Reid also reported positive dialogue with Kelce. He added that he, Assistant General Manager Chris Shea and Kelce’s representatives have had ongoing discussions and expected further conversations in the weeks to come.

“We’ve prepared for either scenario,” Veach said. “I’m sure we’re going to see him here just like we will all the other players’ agents and we’ll continue that dialogue.”
