Another Penn State assistant coach has departed for the NFL, this time it’s assistant quarterbacks coach and program legend Trace McSorley. According to Lions247, McSorley is leaving for a position with the Buffalo Bills, which will reunite him with former PSU graduate assistant Joe Brady, who worked as then-offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead’s right-hand man in 2015 and 2016, when Trace was quarterbacking the Nittany Lions to a Big Ten championship.
Trace was poised to spend a second season in Happy Valley after being retained by head coach Matt Campbell to be an assistant to current QB coach Jake Waters. However, when the NFL comes calling, it’s very difficult for a young, aspiring coach to turn down such an opportunity, especially when said opportunity involves working with Josh Allen.
This is the second time in the past month that the NFL has plucked a PSU assistant coach, as Noah Pauley’s six-week tenure as wide receivers coach ended when he left for the same position by the Green Bay Packers. Perhaps someday, we’ll see Trace return to PSU as an offensive coordinator or maybe even a head coach. In the meantime, we should all wish him well in the next step of his coaching journey.
