While the NFL Draft will deservedly dominate headlines over the weekend, one interesting story will meanwhile fly under the radar.
Two former Los Angeles Rams quarterbacks, Dresser Winn and Case Cookus, went head-to-head in the United Football League Friday night with Winn and the Memphis Showboats coming out on on top 24-20.
Winn finished 17-29 (58.6% completion) for 235 yards, a touchdown, and a passer rating of 96.2. He made his first UFL career start and became the third signal caller to start for Memphis this season. This was the Showboats’ first win in five games.
Cookus completed 15 of 33 passes (45.5% completion) for 145 yards, two touchdowns, an interception, and a passer rating of 65.8. He also became the third quarterback to start for his team this season in relief of injured quarterbacks Alex McGough and Matt Corral.
Through two days of the draft the Rams haven’t dipped into the quarterback pool, though several top names still remain available:
Sheduer Sanders, Colorado
Quinn Ewers, Texas
Kyle McCord, Syracuse
Will Howard, Ohio State
Riley Leonard, Notre Dame
If the Rams don’t end up drafting a quarterback in 2025, they will likely bring in a fourth player for training camp—mostly to limit the throwing loads of the individuals that figure to make the team. Both Winn and Cookus could be options for LA as camp arms.
