Schuylkill Haven, Pa. (2/28/26) – The Kean University women’s flag football team earned two wins on the opening day of action in their first year of varsity competition on Saturday afternoon.
Kean 26, Penn State Schuylkill 18
After falling behind 6-0 after the first quarter, the Cougars (2-1) took the lead for good with two touchdowns in the second quarter. Kean tied things up at six-all as Erika Mercedes hauled in a 23-yard reception. Later trailing 12-6, Mercedes scampered for a one-yard TD rush and converted the extra point attempt for a 13-12 halftime lead.
Mercedes highlighted the third quarter with a 70-yard pick-six.
In the opener, Mercedes finished with 56 receiving yards, 22 rushing yards, two stops an interception and a breakup.
Sela Lefler added three stops and 81 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Jazriel Miranda was 15-for-17 for 172 yards and two touchdowns. She added 17 rushing yards.
Mt. St. Mary’s 26, Kean 0
The Cougars were held scoreless in game two of the afternoon.
Lefler contributed with five stops and a breakup while Mercedes added four stops and two breakups.
Kean 27, Mercy 13
The Cougars exploded for 20-second quarter points to earn their second win of the day in season opening action.
Lefler finished the game with 80 receiving yards and three touchdowns while adding an interception.
Raven Heckel had 29 rushing yards and Miranda was 10-of-11 for 187 yards and three touchdowns.
Kean returns to action on Thursday when they travel to LIU.
