The Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins and Arizona Cardinals could all be in the market for a quarterback this offseason, which means all are candidates to take a swing on Green Bay Packers quarterback Malik Willis.
However, it appears two of those teams are more likely to sign Willis than one of them.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, a source said the Dolphins are “definitely in” on Willis, and the Cardinals are expected to be in the market for Willis’ services, also.
But, in what is bad news for the Browns, Willis landing in Cleveland “doesn’t seem likely,” Fowler said.
“Expect at least two and possibly several teams to be involved on Willis. ‘Miami is definitely in,’ a source said. Arizona is combing the market, too, but it doesn’t seem likely that Willis will end up in Cleveland,” Fowler reported.
In what is more good news for the Dolphins and Cardinals, the expectation around the league is Willis will not hit the commonly projected $30 million per year on a new deal.
Instead, Willis is expected to land a deal more along the lines of what Justin Fields got from the New York Jets, which was two years and $40 million.
“Willis’ market has been a prominent topic this week. But a team offering him $30-plus million per year doesn’t appear realistic,” Fowler reported. “Many front offices believe the more accurate comp is Justin Fields’ deal with the Jets last year (two years, $40 million).
“Could that jump up due to cap inflation and/or multiple suitors? Sure. A range of $20-25 million annually is certainly a good starting point. But Willis hitting the $30 million threshold as a player with six career starts would surprise some of the teams at the combine.”
The Dolphins have been widely connected to Willis this offseason, and for multiple reasons.
Not only does Miami have a need at quarterback with Tua Tagovailoa expected to be released or trade (the former is more likely), but Willis has a connection to head coach Jeff Hafley and general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan, both of whom were in Green Bay with Willis.
The Cardinals have also been heavily connected to Willis, with multiple reports suggesting Arizona is the expected landing spot for the Liberty product.
While the Willis-Hafley-Sullivan connection would seem to give the Dolphins an edge, Arizona’s advantage comes from the fact they have a better cap space situation, with the Cardinals sporting $31.6 million to Miami’s $772,563.
With free agency starting in under two weeks, it won’t be long before we finally get our answer on where Willis ends up, and how much he makes.
