The New England Patriots have been linked to Maxx Crosby in trade rumors, but adding him could mean losing a fan favorite.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer predicted that Crosby could be traded this week and that the Patriots are keeping tabs on his availability. While Crosby would surely help the Patriots, K’Lavon Chaisson’s re-signing would become unlikely.
Chaisson had a career year for the Patriots last season. He had 7 1/2 sacks, 31 tackles and 10 tackles for a loss in the regular season. He had three sacks in the playoffs and set himself up for a nice payday in free agency. He became a fan favorite, but adding Crosby would make him less of a necessity.
The Patriots already have Harold Landry under contract, and figure to add some pass-rush help in the draft. Chaisson is projected to sign a three-year, $26 million deal in free agency. He would be affordable, but the Patriots would also be adding Crosby’s $35 million cap hit.
Crosby played 94% of possible defensive snaps last season. Paying him while also paying Chaisson and Landry would not make sense. Additionally, the Patriots have some major extensions looming, and need to be responsible with their spending. The Patriots have cap space right now, but Christian Gonzalez’s and Drake Maye’s extensions are surely on the back of their minds.
