David Montgomery is ready to begin his next chapter with the Houston Texans starting in 2026.
Before that chapter begins, the longtime Detroit Lions running back made sure pen his farewell to the Motor City.
In his Instagram post, Montgomery started the post with “love always 🤍” followed by a long message, including a goodbye to teammate and counterpart Jahmyr Gibbs.
“It’s hard to find the right words for a goodbye like this,” Montgomery’s message began. “Detroit has never just been a location to me – it’s been a community. And you all have been more than supporters or a team. You’ve been steady hands, loud cheers, honest feedback, and quiet strength when I needed it most.
“There is something special about the people here. The resilience. The loyalty,” message continued.

“I’ll always be proud to say I was shaped by this city and by you.”
“With appreciate and respect, Dmoe.”
A standout for three seasons with Gibbs, Montgomery joined the Motor City franchise to form one of the best backfield duos in football. In three seasons, he rushed for 2,506 yards and 33 touchdowns, including 14 in the red zone.
He now heads to Houston to take over as the lead back and counterpart of second-year running back Woody Marks. The hope is that he’ll take over as the focal running back of the offense in place of Joe Mixon, who is expected to be released after missing all of last season.
