GLENDALE – Outside of a few quarterback options, the name connected to the Arizona Cardinals the most was New York Jets free agent running back Breece Hall. The 24-year-old has been connected to the franchise since the end of last season, where Arizona finished 31st in rushing yards per game. Hall had a career year in 2025 and was eyeing to cash in on a lucrative contract.

However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that desire just became much more difficult. The Jets have placed their franchise tag onto Hall for $14.293 million. A long-term deal between the two sides can still be reached, but the Cardinals chase for Hall might be over.

If Hall had a non-exclusive franchise tag placed on him, he can still seek out offer sheets from other teams. The difference is if New York decides to not match the contract, then the team that offered the deal would send the Jets two first-round picks. An unpayable price for any franchise in the league. The Cardinals only hope would be for Hall to not reach a long-term deal and demand a trade, which would forgo the two first-round picks requirement.

Head coach Mike LaFleur’s connection to Hall made the pairing seem perfect, as the two sides shared a season in the Big Apple. Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett had two seasons with the former second-round pick while calling plays in New York. Arizona’s coaching staff is filled with Hall believers, but the franchise tag means it’ll take a miracle for the 1000-yard rusher to switch teams this offseason.
