NFL free agency is effectively over as is the 2025 NFL draft and its aftermath but teams around the league are still moving and shaking. No team is complete and general managers are always open to making moves to improve their clubs.

For the New York Giants and their general manager, Joe Schoen, there are few things left on the to-do list as they look forward to camp. They could use another quality veteran on the offensive line and perhaps a wideout who can make plays down the field, but they’ll wait until one drops to them.

One move that could be made is a reversal of a previous move that Schoen might be rethinking — the signing of veteran quarterback Jameis Winston. Moe Moton of Bleacher Report sees that as the “one move” the Giants still need to make before the season.

Winston’s stint in New York would be fun to watch with his personality. However, the Giants must think about the complexion of their quarterback room and how they can squeeze value out of it.

Head coach Brian Daboll has tabbed Russell Wilson as the starting quarterback. Big Blue traded back into the first round for Jaxson Dart. Winston is in no-man’s land between the team’s current and potential future starting quarterbacks. The Giants should try to trade him for an early Day 3 draft pick. Winston has some value as a backup. Last year, he threw for 2,121 yards, 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions in 12 games (seven starts) with the Cleveland Browns.

Winston was signed to serve as the team’s backup but was brought in before the team made the bold move to trade up for Jaxson Dart in the draft. Dart is on a trajectory to possibly start this year at some point, which means Winston is in effect a third-stringer-in-waiting.

The Giants can live with that until they see how things pan out. They have had depth issues at quarterback for several years now and still have Tommy DeVito in the fold.

Wilson is signed for one year while Winston has a two-year deal. The Giants have a plan in place that they are set on seeing through, one that has Dart being brought along slowly while the vets handle the 2025 snaps.

Wilson could very well be a one-and-done deal, so trading Winston, who they see as their backup of the future, likely isn’t in the cards.
