On the first day of free agency, the Washington Commanders finalized a deal for one of their non-free agent stars. Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil agreed to a two-year extension with the team that will keep him under contract until 2028, according to two league sources.
The deal, according to one of those sources, is for $60.2 million in total value for the two years and includes $61.5 million in guarantees. Of those guarantees, $32.5 million is in a signing bonus, the largest one ever given to an NFL offensive lineman.
The Commanders traded for Tunsil last year in an exchange of draft picks with the Houston Texans, believing his play would fortify an offensive line that had lacked star power and stability. Their hope came to fruition; despite not earning a sixth Pro Bowl nod, Tunsil had one of his finest seasons in 2025 as Jayden Daniels’ blindside protector.
Tunsil arrived with two seasons remaining on his contract and made it clear to the Commanders that he sought more security. At the start of this offseason, general manager Adam Peters said the feeling was mutual and that the team hoped to hash out a deal sooner rather than later, so as to avoid a situation like last year when receiver Terry McLaurin missed all of training camp and the preseason because of a contract dispute.
“In terms of the evaluation I think and his impact on our team, I thought (he) was really outstanding both on the field and in the locker room,” Peters said in early January. “… He’s an outstanding leader. He is an outstanding mentor to the other offensive lineman. He’s a really good teammate and in a lot of ways you don’t really see it because he is not looking for attention.”
