Take this with a grain of salt, but the New Orleans Saints are said to be in pursuit of Jacksonville Jaguars All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd. Multiple ESPN viewers said on social media that NFL insider Jeremy Fowler listed the Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, and the Saints as teams making competing offers for Lloyd’s services in free agency. But if Fowler did say it, nobody thought to get it on video. Or at least we haven’t been able to track it down.
It’s easy to see why the Saints would want to be in on Lloyd. He’d be a worthy heir for Demario Davis after setting career highs in interceptions (5) and quarterback pressures (28) last season, to go with 81 combined tackles and half a dozen tackles for loss. The former first round draft pick won Pro Bowl and All-Pro second team recognition for his efforts in a contract year, and now he’s positioned himself as the best remaining linebacker in free agency.
So how seriously could the Saints be chasing him? Depending on how creatively they’ve structured deals with other free agents, they could make very competitive offers, and they obviously need someone to step up and replace Davis. Maybe that someone is his longtime tag-team partner Pete Werner. Maybe it’s his understudy Danny Stutsman. Maybe it’s Lloyd. Stay tuned until something more official comes out than Chris Olave’s brother tweeting in support of the move.
