The Chicago Bears have been making decisions on which players they are going to sign this offseason. The legal tampering period of free agency is closing, and the team has made a handful of agreements. One of their top deals thus far has been re-signing a player from last year’s roster. Let’s take a look at the contract and how this signing has been received.

Pro Football Focus gives the Chicago Bears a decent grade for re-signing Braxton Jones
Braxton JonesKing’s advice to Ryan Poles set up a sequence of events that led to Braxton Jones becoming a Bears tackle.

The Bears were able to keep one of their offensive lineman in the Windy City to protect Caleb Williams. Offensive tackle Braxton Jones signed a one-year, $5 million contract, with the ability to climb to $10 million, to remain with Chicago. Pro Football Focus gave this deal an ‘average’ grade. Below is what their rationale was regarding this grade:

“Jones appears to be back in Chicago as a backup, coming off a 55.5 PFF overall grade on 210 snaps in 2025. That was the lowest-graded season of his four-year career, although he generated a career-high 77.4 PFF overall grade in 2024, including an 80.8 PFF pass-blocking grade. Jones can earn another $5 million in incentives, likely tied to playing time, and if he hits those, he could parlay this deal into a long-term contract a year from now.”

Jones would win the starting left tackle job out of training camp last season, but only play a handful of games before being benched. Whether this one-year contract is a chance for Jones to get healthy and perform or just a depth piece with the Ozzy Trapilo injury, Jones has the chance to increase from his 210 total snaps played at left tackle last season.

Chicago is in a position to be a strong team this upcoming season. It will be intriguing to see how Jones plays in another contract season.
