Washington Commanders GM Adam Peters has done a great job in the first week of free agency, hasn’t he? So, what position group would you say is the weakest right now on March 15, 2026?
It is certainly not offensive guards and tackles. Peters has re-signed four: Andrew Wylie, Nick Allegretti, Laremy Tunsil, and Chris Paul. They have depth along the line, with the only question being who will be the center? Will Peters sign a veteran center or perhaps draft one to compete with Allegretti?
Quarterback might actually be their strongest position, though they just lost No. 3 QB Josh Johnson, who signed with the Bengals on Saturday. But they return Jayden Daniels and one of the NFL’s best backups in Marcus Mariota. The No. 3 quarterback for 2026 may not yet be on the roster. It would appear that Sam Hartman just didn’t develop.
At running back, they did lose Chris Rodriguez, who is a hard runner, and I have seen him many times do a fine job covering punts and kickoffs. However, Rodriguez received an offer he simply could not refuse from the Jaguars. On Saturday, the Commanders signed RB Jerome Ford from the Browns to replace Rodriguez. Peters also signed RB Rachaad White on Thursday. He is a good receiver out of the backfield, so he essentially replaces Austin Ekeler.
There is good news; Peters has done a great job addressing the 2025 weaknesses of defensive line, linebackers and they have improved the depth of the receivers. He has presumably signed a tight end starter as well.

So, back to our question about the weakest position right now? Seeing that they surrendered the most yards of any NFL defense in 2025, major work is needed. We can say Peters has done some major work on defense in the first week. Yet, Peters himself would agree there is more work to do at cornerback.
Cornerback room: Who are the corners on the Commanders roster?Amik Robertson was signed in free agency on Monday. He is very physical and has played both inside and outside. His July birthday will be his 28th, so he brings both experience and youth to the position.Trey Amos is only 24 and brings length to the group at 6-foot-1. It will probably be a good leap from his first to second season in 2026.Tre Hawkins was a 6th-round choice of the New York Giants in 2023. Hawkins had a fine 2023, starting three games. But in 2024, Hawkins suffered a fractured lumbar spine in Week 14, ending his season. The Giants waived Hawkins in August of 2025. The Commanders signed Hawkins to a future’s contract in January of 2026.Qwantrezz Knight (28) appeared in six games with the Cardinals in 2023. But afterward, he played for the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL. Like Hawkins (above) the Commanders signed Knight to a Future’s Contract in January.Darius Rush was the 138th overall choice in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Colts. But Rush was waived by the Colts and did not play for them. Rush played in three games in 2023 (Steelers), two games in 2024 (Steelers) and one game in 2025 (Commanders).Mike Sainristil was selected No. 50 in the 2024 Draft by the Commanders. Sainristil will turn 26 later in the fall. He has had some real struggles in coverage in both 2024 and 2025. But he has also intercepted six passes in his two seasons.Car’Lin Viggers (25) was primarily a basketball player, who decided to try football in his senior year of high school. He played at Independence Community College and later at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. The Commanders signed him to the practice squad in 2025. They like his 6-foot-2, 200-pound size and athleticism.
Clearly, a very unproven group, with unproven depth. So, perhaps the Commanders are already looking to sign and draft a corner?
