The Philadelphia Eagles have already seen their wide receiver room take a hit this offseason, and it appears they were unable to land one of the players they hoped might help them stabilize the position. As the new league year approached, we learned, during legal tampering, that they would lose their third wide receiver on the depth chart. Jahan Dotson has signed with the Atlanta Falcons. His departure created an obvious need for reinforcements behind the team’s top playmakers. Adding to that uncertainty is the trading speculation surrounding star receiver A.J. Brown. Dianna Russini has reported that trade talks will stall for now, adding to conflicting reports about whether a move is truly coming.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has suggested that a trade may ultimately be “inevitable”. With that level of uncertainty hanging over the position group, it would make sense for the Eagles’ front office to explore additional options at wide receiver.

We can now scratch at least one name off the list.

Eagles miss out on an opportunity to add Darnell Mooney.

One of those options reportedly included former Falcons receiver Darnell Mooney. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, Philadelphia was among the teams showing interest in him. Unfortunately for the Eagles, the pursuit did not end in their favor. Mooney will instead land with the New York Giants, and that takes another potential weapon off the board. For a division rival to land a player the Eagles reportedly had interest in only adds another wrinkle to an already intriguing offseason.

Mooney would have brought speed, experience, and the ability to stretch the field. All are traits that could have complemented Philadelphia’s offensive scheme nicely. Missing out on him means the Eagles will likely continue exploring other avenues, whether through free agency, the trade market, or the upcoming draft.

We could be alone in this, but we would rather see the Birds draft Brown and Dotson’s replacement, unless they trade for someone like Marvin Harrison Jr. With questions still surrounding the depth chart and the future of one of their biggest stars, the Eagles’ search for receiving help may be far from over. However they choose to address their need, one thing is certain. The wide receiver position remains one of the most intriguing storylines of their offseason.
