The San Francisco 49ers are in desperate need of edge rusher help.

The Niners finished with a putrid 20 sacks last season and both Nick Bosa and Mykel Williams, who the jury is still out on, are returning from torn ACLs.

Making matters even worse, San Francisco lost a depth piece in Bryce Huff after he unexpectedly retired at the age of 27.

In order to add a bit more juice along the edge, Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport thinks the Niners should sign five-time Pro Bowler and former Buffalo Bills edge rusher Joey Bosa in free agency.

“Granted, Bosa is no longer the player who won Defensive Rookie of the Year honors in 2016, has been named to five Pro Bowls and logged double-digit sacks on four separate occasions. He had five sacks in 562 snaps with the Buffalo Bills in 2025,” Davenport wrote. “But the 49ers needed to bolster the pass rush even before edge-rusher Bryce Huff abruptly retired after finishing with three fewer sacks as a team last year than Myles Garrett of the Cleveland Browns had by himself.”

As Davenport points out, Bosa is not the player he once was.

After tallying double-digit sacks in four of his first six seasons in the NFL, Bosa has not topped more than 6.5 since, and he has dealt with injuries in that span.

In 2025, Bosa tallied five sacks in 15 games, but he was non-existent in the second half of the season, which led to Buffalo not bringing him back.

Not exactly the sure thing the Niners need, but beggars can’t be choosers here and the edge rusher-needy 49ers don’t have many good options left. In fact, Bosa is probably the best one available.

After years of speculating about a Bosa brothers reunion in San Francisco, it feels like this is the year it happens.
