Sometimes social media isn’t just confusing. It’s completely wrong. That’s what Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie receiver Emeka Egbuka says happened this week after a controversial post from an X account many people believed belonged to him.

The account, @EgbukaEmeka, suddenly posted a question that grabbed attention fast.
“Is CTE even real?”
The problem? Egbuka says the account isn’t his.
“For anyone wondering, I haven’t had Twitter since high school,” the former Ohio State star wrote on Instagram, adding that the X account being circulated online “isn’t me.”
The Buccaneers quickly backed him up.
“The below account is neither owned nor operated by Emeka Egbuka,” the team said in a statement on X. “It is in no way affiliated with Emeka or the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.”
But the situation raised eyebrows for another reason.
According to Front Office Sports, Tampa Bay’s own social media team had tagged the same account more than 60 times during Egbuka’s rookie season. That included birthday posts and other team updates.
The account has since been suspended.
The confusion highlights one of the ongoing issues with the platform formerly known as Twitter. Since the switch to X, users can pay for verification, making it harder than ever to tell which accounts are actually authentic.
As for Egbuka, he’s focused on football.
The 2025 first-round pick finished a strong rookie season with 63 catches, 938 receiving yards, and six touchdowns, finishing fifth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.
Turns out the viral account wasn’t his.
But the internet ran with it anyway.
