Troy Aikman’s temporary gig with an NFL team other than the one he led to three Super Bowl titles is being extended into something more.

The Hall of Famer and ex-Cowboys quarterback will continue to work with the Miami Dolphins “in some capacity,” he said recently. Aikman had been previously hired by the Dolphins to help identify a new general manager and then stayed on as part of the organization’s search for a new head coach.

“Kind of caught me out of left field,” Aikman told the Rodeo Time podcast of his moonlighting in Miami. “I wasn’t expecting that, but I dove into it and decided I would do it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Felt like I was of some help. Where that might go, I’m not sure.”

The 59-year-old will embark this fall on his 25th season behind the mic as a color commentator and his fifth on Monday Night Football. Aikman has no apparent plans to give that up for his as-yet undefined consultancy with the Dolphins.

Aikman is the latest NFL former player-turned-broadcaster to accept a role within a team’s front office. Tom Brady, the lead color commentator for Fox, is a minority owner of the Raiders and a significant voice within the football operations. And Matt Ryan is the new president of football for his former Falcons team. Brady has kept his TV gig; Ryan left CBS Sports to take the Atlanta job.

With Aikman’s help, Miami hired Jon-Eric Sullivan as the team’s new GM and settled on Jeff Hafley as their new head coach.

The six-time Pro Bowler has said he always considered taking a front-office track after his playing days were over, but the timing never seemed to work out relative to either his familial obligations or his broadcast career.

Jerry Jones and the Cowboys have never reached out to Aikman about an executive role. But when the Dolphins did, Aikman says, the timing was right.

“That’s kind of scratched whatever itch I had when it came to being in the front office.”

Longtime fans may recall that Aikman nearly came out of retirementto play for the Dolphins in 2003 , once former Dallas coordinators Dave Wannstedt and Norv Turner were with Miami.

It remains to be seen what Aikman’s new responsibilities with the Dolphins will entail or how it might affect his continued presence in ESPN’s flagship booth.
