The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly finalizing a deal to bring in some backup for Patrick Mahomes. NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Monday that the Chiefs and New York Jets are finalizing a deal to send quarterback Justin Fields to Kansas City, pending a physical. The Chiefs are expected to give the Jets a sixth-round pick in 2027 in exchange for Fields. Fields was drafted by the Chicago Bears in 2021 as the 11th overall pick. A sought-after quarterback at the time, Fields signed a four-year contract and spent three seasons with the Bears, all ending in a losing record. He was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024 but served as a backup to quarterback Russell Wilson for much of the season. He joined the Jets in 2025 on a two-year deal. NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Jets would have to pay a large portion of Fields’ salary, as he is due $10 million guaranteed. Schefter said that other teams were interested in Fields, but he wanted to go to Kansas City. It’s not yet clear if Mahomes will be ready at the start of the season, so adding a quarterback like Fields offers a chance for success, and at a minimum, a safety net.
