The NFL opened free agency with a flurry of moves. With teams now agreeing to signings and trades that are being finalized, attention shifts to the NFL Draft.
Some teams, however, still need clarity on how their 2026 rosters will take shape. The Detroit Lions have stayed active leading up to the draft, making several notable moves.

They also received troubling news about a key piece of their defense. Brian Branch continues to recover from an Achilles injury, and the team now has a clearer timeline for his return. According to a recent report, Branch is not expected to be ready for Week 1.

This setback delivers a significant blow to the Lions’ defense. The unit has felt Branch’s absence since he suffered the late-season injury against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Pro Bowl defensive back out of Alabama established himself as a vital playmaker. His impact helped push Detroit to the NFC Championship Game in 2023.

The Lions only had a brief window with both Branch and Aidan Hutchinson on the field together. When they did in 2023, the team stood on the doorstep of the Super Bowl.
Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch (32) tries to intercept a pass intended for Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson (87) during the second half at Ford Field in Detroit on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2025.
Now, Detroit must wait again to reunite them. Branch’s recovery could sideline him deep into the 2026 season before he returns.
Branch recorded seven interceptions, 4.5 sacks, 20 tackles for loss, and a defensive touchdown during his Lions career.
