The McNair family released a statement following the passing of longtime Indianapolis Colts‘ owner Jim Irsay. Despite being rivals on the field as the owners of the Houston Texans, the McNairs had a budding relationship with the Colts’ owner and will remember him fondly for his kind-hearted ways.
“We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Jim Irsay,” The McNair family wrote. “Our heartfelt condolences are with the Irsay family and the Colts organization during this devastating time. For decades, Jim was a pillar in our NFL family and a fierce competitor while also being a great friend. He will be missed but his impact on the game will be felt in Indianapolis and across the league for many years to come.”

Earlier last week, Irsay died peacefully in his sleep at the age of 65. Multiple players, coaches and former Colts have all released statements, honoring the life and legacy of a man who grew up around football.
“I am heartbroken to hear about Jim Irsay’s passing,” former MVP and Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning said on social media. “He was an incredibly generous and passionate owner and I will always be indebted to him for giving me my start in the NFL. His love for the Colts and the city of Indy was unmatched. His impact on the players who played for him will not be forgotten.”
More recently, though, Irsay battled health issues and became far less visible following a fall at his home Dec. 8, 2023. Police officers responded to a 911 call from Irsay’s home. According to the report, the officers found Irsay breathing but unresponsive and with a bluish skin tone. He was later diagnosed with a respiratory illness.
Growing up in the football family of Baltimore, Irsay worked his way from ticket sales to public relations and later served as the general manager. After his father’s death in 1997, he became the primary owner and changed the culture of the building, putting a more team-first approach giving back to the community.
The NFL continues to mourn his loss, along with those in Houston.
