Shortly before being traded to the Denver Broncos, former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was asked during a boxing promotion if he might enter the ring someday down the road. Waddle was then asked to name an NFL player he could face, and Waddle immediately mentioned Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain.

“Pat Surtain, I would beat the [expletive] out of him. I’d beat the dog [expletive] out of him,” Waddle said. “There are a lot more people, but that’s just top of my mind. I’d beat the dog [expletive] out of bro.”

Waddle and Surtain, of course, were teammates at Alabama, winning a national championship together. After being traded to Denver earlier this week, Waddle will now reunite with his former teammate.

During his introductory conference call with reporters, Waddle was asked about his comments on fighting PS2.

“I still stand on what I said about Pat,” Waddle said.

Smack talk aside, Waddle made it clear that he is excited to reunite with Surtain.

“It was special,” Waddle said of posting an Instagram story showing himself on a video call with Surtain after the trade. “He was one of the first calls that I made. We talked about this earlier in our careers, we wanted to get together and play with each other. Just seeing it happen, it’s special.”

Waddle said he’s kept in contact with Surtain since their NFL careers began in 2021, and the cornerback has kept Waddle “in the loop” about the state of the Broncos “without even knowing.”

And, in addition to reuniting on the practice field, Waddle and Surtain will also team up in the Denver community.

“I’m definitely going to get in the community and do something,” Waddle said. “I know PS2 is going to help me find different things to get into. I know he does a lot of good things out here.”
