A lot has happened this offseason for the Pittsburgh Steelers under GM Omar Khan.
Some big names have been added to the roster in free agency and via trade, while some well-known player have left the organization, too, creating some roster holes.
One of the biggest remaining ones is at left guard after the loss of Isaac Seumalo to the Arizona Cardinals in free agency. While all indications are the Steelers are content with Spencer Anderson as their starter moving forward, the 2026 NFL Draft could offer Pittsburgh a path to secure a high-end talent at the position to replace Seumalo.
That’s what longtime NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay has the Steelers doing in his latest mock draft, landing Penn State guard Olaivavega Ioane at No. 21 overall.
“Ioane is the best offensive lineman in this draft class. He’s a plug-and-play starter whose tape is even better than that of Tyler Booker, who was the No. 12 pick by the Cowboys last year,” McShay writes of the Steelers’ selection. “The problem is he’s a guard who lacks elite athletic traits, so he could experience a draft-night slide that doesn’t match up to his exceptional tape. As the saying goes, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
“In this case, 18 teams (with 20 picks) passing on Ioane would be a blessing for the Steelers, who just lost Isaac Seumalo in free agency.”
Ioane is arguably a top-10 talent in the draft, and he’s easily the best offensive lineman, regardless of position. He’s better than any of the top tackles in the class, and his tape is exceptional.
The only problem with Ioane is that he’s a guard, and, as McShay pointed out, he doesn’t have elite traits. The guard position isn’t a premium one, either, so it could cause teams to pass on him early in the first round, leading to a slide.
That could lead to another David DeCastro-like situation for the Steelers, an elite talent sliding to them because of positional value, allowing them to land a longtime starter at a position of need.
Ioane has been connected to the Steelers repeatedly in recent weeks, from ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. in his latest mock to our own Ryan Paglia in his Mock Draft Monday exercise this morning.
Questions remain on the left side of the offensive line in Pittsburgh, especially with left tackle Broderick Jones’ health up in the air. But getting a player like Ioane at No. 21 overall would strengthen the unit as a whole, giving Pittsburgh a great young core in the trenches to keep building around under first-year head coach Mike McCarthy.
