The Philadelphia Eagles are doing their homework. A recent stop in Coral Gables may be evidence of that. With pro days taking center stage, one hosted by the Miami Hurricanes prompted a visit from one of the Birds’ top defensive assistants. Every NFL team is scattering scouts and assistants to gather as much information as possible ahead of the draft. Per 247 Sports’ Gaby Urrutia, Clint Hurtt, the Eagles’ defensive line coach and associate head coach, showed up in South Florida, and this certainly didn’t feel like a coincidence. It more so felt like intent. It seems to reveal more than a swift or sweeping glance. This seems to suggest that Philadelphia is taking a keen interest in Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor.

Philadelphia’s need along the edge has been well documented, especially after losing key production this offseason. Jaelan Phillips is gone. Questions surround Nolan Smith. This team can’t keep kicking Brandon Graham’s tires.

That makes Miami’s duo of Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor particularly intriguing. Bain, one of the most decorated defenders in college football last season, brings elite recognition and production to the table. The 2025 Ted Hendricks Award winner is a Consensus All-American and ACC Defensive Player of the Year. He backed up the accolades with 54 tackles, 9.5 sacks, and a knack for making game-changing plays.

His speed and explosiveness were reportedly on full display during workouts, reinforcing why many view him as a first-round talent. Mesidor, meanwhile, offers a different but equally valuable skill set. A Second-Team All-American and First-Team All-ACC selection, he piled up 63 tackles, 12.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles in 2025. His physicality and ability to set the edge make him a strong fit for teams looking to add toughness in the trenches.

For the Eagles, either player would address a clear need. While there are other areas to evaluate, such as the secondary and the offensive line, Hurtt’s presence suggests the defensive front remains a priority.

Pro day visits don’t guarantee draft selections, but they often provide a strong hint. In this case, the Eagles’ interest in Miami’s top pass rushers feels more than casual. It feels like the groundwork for something bigger. Place an asterisk by Rueben Bain Jr. and Akheem Mesidor’s names if you haven’t done so already.
