TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) – The Kansas Senate passed a bill on Friday, March 27, creating a Sports Authority Board to oversee the Kansas City Chiefs’ proposed facilities.
The proposed board would include legislative leaders, the governor, city mayors, and a representative from the Chiefs as voting members.
The authority would be part of the confirmation process tied to the team’s plans, which include a proposed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas, and a team headquarters in Olathe.
The bill will now move to the next step in the legislative process.
Senator Cindy Holscher released a statement regarding the Senate’s passage of the Sports Authority bill:
“Kansans are facing a real affordability crisis, and I voted no because this stadium deal won’t do anything to address it. It’s a raw deal for Kansans, diverting billions of dollars in taxpayer money from schools, roads, and public safety to handouts for a billionaire family.”
“We should be focused on making life easier for Kansans, not on big risky deals that won’t have the payoff they claim. I’m going to keep fighting for what really matters, like lower costs, stronger schools, and economic growth — but in ways that protect Kansas families, rather than sticking them with the bill.”
