The Denver Broncos made a big splash this offseason initiating a blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins for wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. But another trade may be in the works with a fellow Southern team.

Before Broncos head coach Sean Payton found his way to Denver, he spent 16 seasons with the New Orleans Saints.

In article posted by Bleacher Report, Moe Moton lists seven hypothetical ‘surprise’ trades that could happen this offseason. One of them including a trade that sends New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara to the Broncos.

Payton coached the 31-year-old running back for five seasons between 2017 and 2021.

The Saints signed former Jacksonville Jaguar running back Travis Etienne Jr. leaving a big question mark surrounding the future of Kamara in New Orleans.

With the Saints reaching agreement today with RB Travis Etienne, there now are questions around the league about whether RB Alvin Kamara will be moving on from New Orleans and whether the Saints would be willing trade him. Teams are tracking and wondering about it.

Kamara signed a two-year extension in 2024 that is set to be voided in 2026.

Saints head coach Kellen Moore was asked about the veteran’s role following Eitenne’s signing, to which he brushed off the question.

“We’d like to go through that process certainly,” he said. “We know Alvin means a lot to us. We’re three days in this thing. We’ve signed Travis, and we’ll go through that process.”

He later was asked about Kamara’s plans for retirement.

“I’m not going to get into all that stuff. Haven’t had those conversations anyway,” Moore said.

Sean Payton Coached Alvin Kamara During the Peak of His Career

Kamara’s first five NFL seasons were spent with Sean Payton in New Orleans. In 2017, his rookie season, Kamara was named NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.

During those years, Payton turned Kamara into a dual-threat running back. Kamara recorded 4,238 rushing yards, 3,263 receiving yards, and 67 touchdowns.

Following the 2021 season, Kamara’s dominance however, teetered off after dealing with several different injuries.

The coach and player duo did reunite earlier this month before any rumors began swirling about  Kamara becoming a Denver Bronco.

Sean Payton was the head coach for Founders FFC in a flag football tournament in the offseason that featured Alvin Kamara on the roster.

Where Does Kamara Fit In the Denver Broncos Backfield?

The Denver Broncos signed running back J.K. Dobbins to a two-year, $16 million contract in March 2026. Dobbins led the Broncos in rushing yards (772) despite suffering an injury in Week 10 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Their rookie running back RJ Harvey was drafted in the second round as the 60th overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft out of UCF. While Harvey got off to a slow start, he had several big games in the latter half of the season.

Harvey had 121 all-purpose yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 16.

With an already loaded backfield, Kamara’s addition would only make it more crowded. However, Sean Payton knows how to utilize the 31-year-old better than any other coach in the league and would find a way to make it work.
