The Washington Commanders have had a busy 2026 NFL offseason so far. After a season in which they went 5-12, it was clear they had to be aggressive this offseason to get things back on track.

The defensive side of the ball was one big area of emphasis, and they started addressing it quickly by adding Odafe Oweh, K’Lavon Chaisson, Leo Chenal, Nick Cross, Amik Robertson, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Tim Settle.

They have done a great job of addressing key areas, but there is still one major position they still need to address and it is the linebacker spot. While adding Chenal was a good start, they need someone other than Frankie Luvu to pair alongside him for the future.

A way they can do so is in the 2026 NFL Draft, and an ideal target, Sonny Styles, could be there for them to pick.

How The Commanders Could Be Able to Draft Sonny Styles

Early on in the draft process, Styles was widely considered a top-five pick. Yet, there is a world in which he could end up falling to them.

The Las Vegas Raiders are clearly set to go with Fernando Mendoza. The New York Jets are linked to Arvell Reese and David Bailey. The Arizona Cardinals have also been linked to Bailey or an offensive tackle. The Tennessee Titans have had increased talks surrounding them drafting Jeremiyah Love. The New York Giants are likely to go wide receiver, and the Cleveland Browns are set to focus on the offensive side of the ball.

If this ends up being the case, Styles could end up falling right to the Commanders.

Why Sonny Styles is the Ideal Draft Pick for the Washington Commanders

Styles is able to completely fit Dan Quinn‘s defense and already embodies the aggressive mentality needed to fit into the scheme right away.

Styles offers versatility as he can play well against the run, but his former time as a safety before moving to linebacker helps him excel in coverage, too. His range, movement skills, and athleticism help him stand out frequently.

Styles would give the Commanders they can rely on in every situation as he can help against the run, carry tight ends and running backs in coverage, and even blitz when needed. For a Commanders team trying to build a faster, younger, more versatile defense, Styles checks almost every box while giving them a true tone-setter for the future.

The Commanders are unlikely to re-sign Bobby Wagner, which puts a greater emphasis on addressing the linebacker spot. If Styles is there, the Commanders need to make it a priority to draft him.
