A little over a month ago, the Cleveland Browns proposed a rule change to allow teams to trade draft picks from up to five future drafts, an increase from the current limit of three. A lot of people found it funny that the Cleveland Browns would be the team to propose this after they pulled off the worst trade in NFL history, using the three-year limit to acquire Deshaun Watson.

Speaking at the owners’ meetings on Sunday, Andrew Berry said this about why the team proposed this rule change. “Giving more flexibility to teams in terms of volume and creativity of transactions.” He was then asked about desperate GMs mortgaging the team’s future to save their job, which was “a little bit more rooted in fear than reality, though … there is always ownership oversight for every NFL franchise.”

What this means for the Browns

This proposed rule change will likely be voted on this week, so stay tuned to see if it passes or fails. Interestingly, the team proposed this, and a few weeks later, changed the wording in Myles Garrett’s contract. If it passes, it feels like the chances Garrett actually gets traded go up.
