The Denver Broncos entered the 2025 season with rising expectations behind quarterback Bo Nix, who followed up a record-setting rookie campaign with an even stronger second year. Nix led Denver to a 14-3 record and the AFC’s top seed, setting franchise and league marks for wins early in a quarterback’s career while continuing to establish himself as the centerpiece of Sean Payton’s offense.

His second season included 3,931 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and additional production on the ground, while guiding the Broncos to their first playoff win since 2015.  That postseason run appeared to be the breakthrough moment of his young career, especially after Denver’s dramatic 33-30 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills in the divisional round.

However, that momentum came to an abrupt end late in that game. On a designed run during the closing moments of overtime, Nix suffered a fractured ankle, an injury severe enough to require surgery and immediately end his season. After finishing the game with 279 passing yards and three touchdowns, he was later placed on injured reserve and ruled out for the remainder of the playoffs.

The injury had immediate consequences for Denver. Forced to turn to backup quarterback Jarrett Stidham, the Broncos’ offense struggled in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots. Played in blizzard-like conditions, Denver managed just seven points in a 10-7 loss, with Stidham throwing for 133 yards, one touchdown and one interception while also losing a fumble.

Following surgery, early expectations around Nix’s recovery were cautiously optimistic. Team officials indicated the procedure went well and projected a return timeline around organized team activities (OTAs), though concerns lingered given his history of ankle issues and the physical nature of his playing style.

That outlook has since improved significantly. On Monday, Broncos owner Greg Penner provided a positive update, stating the team has zero concern about Nix’s long-term health and confirming that his recovery is ahead of schedule. Penner added that the surgery went really well, reinforcing expectations that Nix will be fully ready for OTAs as he continues progressing through rehab.

The update carries major implications for Denver heading into the offseason. With Nix expected to be available for the full offseason program, the Broncos can build continuity on offense and integrate notable additions like WR Jaylen Waddle. Nix’s presence will be key as the franchise looks to take the next step after falling just short of the Super Bowl.
