Sean McVay explains long-standing bond with Kirk Cousins
Speaking in a clip shared by ESPN, McVay reflected on how their relationship was built.
“I’ll tell you what meant a lot about Kirk and I’s relationship. It coincided with his first opportunity to really start full time was when I first got an opportunity to call plays,” McVay said.
He added: “Jay Gruden giving me a chance as an OC and putting his arm around me and helping me grow. Kirk and I experienced a lot of first things together.”

The connection dates back to their time in Washington, where McVay was offensive coordinator and Cousins stepped into a starting role.
That period proved crucial for both. Cousins established himself as a starting quarterback, while McVay built the reputation that eventually led him to Los Angeles.
Those shared early experiences laid the foundation for a relationship that still holds weight.

“Kirk was awesome. He’s played at a high level. He’s a starting quarterback in this league. It’s just a matter of what’s he looking for, what the situation is and if there is some interest in us, Kirk, come see us man. I would love to have you,” the Rams head coach concluded.
McVay’s comments go beyond reflection. They represent a clear invitation, showing genuine interest in bringing Cousins to Los Angeles.
The Rams’ head coach made it clear that the door is open, but also acknowledged that the decision depends on Cousins’ priorities.
For now, the connection remains a key factor. And if circumstances allow, it could yet shape the next chapter of Cousins’ career.
