NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – Saints first-year head coach Kellen Moore said that some offensive linemen may be shuffled around during OTAs as they look to put the best five players on the field.
One of those linemen was former 2022 first-round pick Trevor Penning, who has recently seen reps at left guard.
It’s the third position he’s played since arriving in New Orleans as a Saint, under another new head coach, as the team attempts to help Penning find consistency.
Since being taken in the first round, he went from a small college program at Northern Iowa to starting in the NFL. He was also benched, marking a tumultuous start to his pro career.
“His play style, his physicality is what jumps off the tape, so we’ll allow him to play fast, free and confident because when he plays like that, he’s going to be a really, really good player,” Moore said.
MORE SAINTS
Moore’s has had success making position changes for offensive linemen in the past. As offensive coordinator of the Super Bowl LIX Champion Philadelphia Eagles, Moore moved Mekhi Becton from tackle to guard, where he became a starter through 15 games.
In other shifts, Moore moved Taliese Fuaga back to right tackle, a position he played at Oregon State before being drafted by the Saints.
“I don’t really care about left-tackle, right-tackle components,” Moore said. “In this league, the edge rushers go wherever the matchups go, and they’re going to go wherever they line up.”
Moore said that for him, it’s not just about putting five players with the most talent on the field, but it’s also about establishing cohesion and communication.
This year’s rookie, Kelvin Banks Jr., also lined up at left tackle. Center Erik McCoy and right guard Cesar Ruiz stayed in their usual positions.
