The NFL made official Friday the offseason workout schedule that Broncos coach Sean Payton had previously discussed.
The NFL announced that the Broncos will report for workouts at Broncos Park on May 4, have organized team activities June 2-4 and June 8-11 and a mandatory minicamp June 16-18.
Payton had first said on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show” in February that due to a longer season in which the Broncos went to the AFC Championship Game, they would not report for offseason workouts until the start of May and would not take the field for OTAs until the start of June. He provided specifics on the schedule at the NFL owners meetings Tuesday in Phoenix.
The Broncos are permitted to have players start offseason drills as soon as April 20. And they are permitted to have 10 OTA sessions, three more than the seven that are scheduled.
The Broncos have by far the latest report date for any NFL team, with Indianapolis being the second-latest on April 21. Seattle and New England, which played in the Super Bowl, both have report dates of April 20.
Payton said Tuesday that drills in May will be weightlifting and conditioning. He said quarterback Bo Nix will be ready for the start of offseason drills after he suffered a broken right ankle in Denver’s 33-30 overtime win over Buffalo in a divisional playoff game Jan. 17 and sat out the 10-7 loss to New England in the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 25.
