Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams has filed to trademark the nickname “Iceman” along with associated logos.The trademark filing is intended to control merchandise and goods made using the name and his likeness.Former NBA player George Gervin, also known as “Iceman,” has expressed pushback against Williams’s trademark attempt.Williams stated the move was a business decision and not meant as a sign of disrespect toward Gervin.
Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams made headlines last season for his impressive ability in clutch moments down the stretch during the 2025. Now, he’s making headlines about the “Iceman” nickname he earned from those very moments.
Given the popularity of Williams and his “Iceman” moniker, Williams filed paperwork to trademark the name, a logo and two silhouettes of his improbable fourth-and-8 pass to Rome Odunze during Chicago’s wild-card win over the Green Bay Packers. But Williams has faced some pushback from former NBA player George Gervin, who went by “Iceman” during his 14-year career with the Virginia Squires, San Antonio Spurs and Chicago Bulls.
Williams addressed the situation for the first time during an appearance with Front Office Sports New, where he explained the reasoning behind the trademark, which covers a variety of merchandise and goods associated with the “Iceman” moniker and logos.
“It’s more or less people making clothing or people making things like that,” Williams said. “And I can’t control what people are making of me, or anything like that, and putting the name on it. So it’s just to control that aspect of it. That was the main reason of doing it.”
As for any speculation about beef between Williams and Gervin, the former No. 1 overall pick quickly shut that down and made it clear the trademark was strictly business.

“I just wanted to trademark it. I’m trying to do that just to make sure that we can control what’s being made and put out about me using that name. It’s all respect to George. I didn’t know personally, and I understand, what he’s trying to do. We haven’t talked, him and I, and we may talk at some point. But it was nothing between George and I.”
The “Iceman” moniker happened organically for Williams, who was at his best in clutch situations leading an NFL-record seven fourth-quarter comebacks (including the playoffs) in 2025. While Williams was hesitant to the “Iceman” nickname given to him by his teammates, it quickly grew on him.
“At first I didn’t per se like the nickname,” Williams said. “I thought there was cooler nicknames, and then it all kind of came together. My teammates gave me the name, my teammates started calling me it around facility and things like that. I just kind of let it fester and let it become what it is now. I’ve actually earned a liking of the name.”
