The Washington Commanders are preparing for life without Bobby Wagner, and Dan Quinn’s new green dot strategy could shift the entire defense.

ASHBURN, Va. — The green dot and the Mike Linebacker position seemingly go hand-in-hand, but for this year’s Washington Commanders squad, the two duties may be parting ways, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

For the Commanders, linebacker Bobby Wagner has served in both roles for the team the past two years, coming to the team along with head coach Dan Quinn and linebackers coach Ken Norton Jr. in 2024.

Quick Facts: Defensive Communication Hub

| Entity | Role | 2026 Context |
| Dan Quinn | Head Coach | Redesigning defensive communication structure |
| Frankie Luvu | Linebacker | Will LB; Named candidate to take over green dot |
| Bobby Wagner | Linebacker | Unsigned free agent; Former defensive play caller |

With Wagner not yet under contract for 2026, though that door hasn’t been closed, Washington is at least in some way preparing for life after the future Hall of Famer, a life where the job done by one man in the past may be done by two in the future.

“In this instance, we’ll have a number of different packages. It will be, I suppose, the best way—which [player] has probably the most on-field [presence] in all the packages would be the one that would do that,” Quinn commented about the green dot duties while in Phoenix last week for the NFL’s Annual League Meeting.

Key Takeaways

The Will Linebacker Shift: Dan Quinn is actively considering moving the green dot away from the traditional Mike Linebacker, naming Frankie Luvu as a prime candidate from the Will spot.

The Safety Valve: With Daronte Jones’s defense requiring the play caller to rarely leave the field, newly acquired safety Nick Cross (96% snap rate in 2025) emerges as a highly viable communication hub.

The Understudy: Jordan Magee has spent two seasons shadowing Bobby Wagner’s green dot duties, giving Washington a homegrown, developmental option in the middle.

Who will wear the Commanders’ defensive green dot in 2026?

According to head coach Dan Quinn, the Washington Commanders could consider moving the defensive communicator role away from the traditional Mike Linebacker spot to another linebacker, or even a safety. Candidates include Frankie Luvu, according to Quinn. Meanwhile, previous snap counts also lend credibility to the possibility of safeties Nick Cross or Will Harris being considered as well.

Dan Quinn wants the defensive play caller to be on the field for every package

The green dot is just that, a sticker on the back of one helmet among the 11 players on either side of the ball. On offense, it’s simple: the quarterback wears it. On defense, it’s usually the Mike Linebacker, or middle linebacker, the man who most often lines up in the center of the defense. That sticker indicates to everyone that his helmet has a communicator, so he can hear his coaches’ play calls and relay them to his teammates. Only one green dot can be on the field at any time for each side of the ball.

“I’ve done it with safeties before,” Quinn continued. “Really, the green dot is the initial part of the communication hub. That doesn’t mean they’re making all the calls and the checks.”

Quinn points to another key difference between the offense and the defense. Typically, on offense, no more than two players are making calls and checks as the unit sets the play and protection plan for the quarterback. If a quarterback is in charge of both the play and setting the protection, then he’s the only one making checks or changes.

On defense, really, anyone can communicate what they see or think, though a team may limit who has the authority to make an official change to the defensive plan to avoid overcomplicating things.

That means, no matter who receives the call as the green dot, getting the details of what is about to happen on defense really is a team effort. Just because a safety who will be on the field for 90+% of the plays calls the initial play doesn’t mean a wise linebacker who maybe plays 60% of the snaps can’t make a check when he’s on the field.

Frankie Luvu could take over the communication duties from the Will Linebacker spot

Quinn says that in practice, several players get reps with the communicator, so there are many players with the experience to do it. But ultimately, the goal is to have someone on the field as much as possible wearing the green dot.

“[LB Frankie] Luvu is somebody that I would also consider into that space. He’ll still likely play our Will linebackers, which is one of our inside guys, who are similar, but he could be the one to go do that,” Quinn said. “That doesn’t mean he would have the most at the line communication, but it does mean you do have to have a few people training for that.”

Quinn said that, in his experience, two communication hubs are needed. “One in the front seven and one in the secondary. So, whether we have the green dot or not, who’s in and out of checks, how do they get there? But one in the front seven, one in the back seven, and then one of those positions we’ll have the green dot.”

Multiple veteran safeties offer Daronte Jones alternative play-calling options

In addition to Luvu, newly added safety Nick Cross comes from the Indianapolis Colts’ defense, where he played 96% of the snaps in 2025 and 100% in 2024. Additionally, veteran safety Will Harris played 89% of the snaps he was healthy for last year for the Commanders, and linebacker Leo Chenal comes over from the Kansas City Chiefs, having played just 42% of his team’s snaps in 2025, but is expected to have a much bigger role in the Washington defense in 2026.

2025 Defensive Snap Counts for Green Dot Candidates

| Player | Position | 2025 Team | Defensive Snap Percentage |
| Nick Cross | Safety | Colts | 96% |
| Will Harris | Safety | Commanders | 89% |
| Leo Chenal | Linebacker | Chiefs | 42% |

And, of course, we can’t forget Jordan Magee, who has been studying as Wagner’s understudy for the past two seasons, getting those valuable practice reps as the Mike Linebacker and green dot wearer in the process.

I’m not sure it’s a competition to be the main communicator, or more so, a privilege to be trusted with the first layer of communication from coaches to the defense on game day. What I do know is that while the team develops what it will become in the coming year, the green dot placement will be viewed as one of the first important decisions made by new defensive coordinator Daronte Jones.
